Bananas Foster Belgian Waffles

What are Bananas Foster Belgian Waffles? Light, fluffy Belgian Waffles topped with caramelized bananas in a buttery, dark rum brown sugar sauce. This is the perfect decadent breakfast or brunch recipe that is really simple to prepare!

Wouldn’t these yummy waffles be perfect for Mother’s Day or Easter brunch? I see you bobbing your head up and down in agreement.

As for the Bananas Foster sauce on top of these awesome waffles, that was kind of a whim. I am constantly seeing images of different foods with “bananas foster” in the title. Cupcakes, pancakes, muffins, but I didn’t see any waffles. I knew that I had to create a recipe for waffles topped with bananas foster sauce!

Ingredients needed

Ingredients to make Bananas Foster Belgian Waffles.
  • I used a boxed waffle mix to accommodate different food allergies. You can use gluten-free or regular mix making sure to follow “their” liquid requirements. I will also include a homemade waffle mix recipe below.
  • Milk* – this can be coconut, cashew, whole, or milk of your choice. Just be careful with non-fat or thinner almond milks, they may make your batter too thin.
  • Light colored oil like canola and large eggs.
  • Pure vanilla extract to flavor the waffles.
  • For the sauce you will need butter, brown sugar and cinnamon for the base.
  • Banana liqueur and dark rum add the intense flavor to the sauce.
  • Fresh bananas are sliced and lightly cooked in the sauce. So yummy!

How to make Bananas Foster Belgian Waffles

For the Waffles:

Heat waffle iron per manufacture’s instructions.

Place waffle mix in a large bowl.

Mix in the coconut milk*.

Waffle batter and whisk in a large bowl.

Add oil, eggs, and vanilla.

Whisk together just until combined.

Pour batter into waffle iron per instructions. Mine uses about a 1/3 cup on each side.

Cook until golden brown. Place on a cooling rack while you continue with the remaining batter.

Place baking sheet in a warm oven (170 degrees) to keep waffles warm until ready to serve.

For the Bananas Foster Sauce:

Combine the brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon in a small saucepan.

Cook over low heat until the sugar dissolves.

Brown sugar and butter melting in a saucepan.

Stir in the banana liqueur and the dark rum.

Add the sliced bananas to the pan and continue to cook until bananas soften.

Spoon sauce over waffles and serve dusted with powdered sugar.

You can go crazy and pour the sauce over a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or add whipped cream to make it pretty.

Recipe Notes & Tips

  • Now I do have to caution you, these babies contain alcohol. If you would like to burn more of the alcohol off, use a long lighter, you know the fireplace kind, and light the sauce on fire in the saucepan…..very carefully!
  • If you will not be eating all of the waffles in one sitting, do not pour the sauce over the top. Allow leftover waffles to cool completely and store in a zipper topped freezer bag in the refrigerator or freezer.
  • Reheat waffles in the toaster when ready to serve.

For the Waffles

  • 2 cups Waffle Mix I love Krusteaz
  • 1.75 cups coconut milk or cashew, whole, your choice
  • 0.5 cup canola oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • .25 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar lightly packed
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • .25 cup banana liqueur I used 99 Bananas
  • .25 cup dark rum I used Myers
  • 2 ripe bananas sliced
