This Beef and Broccoli Stir Fry recipe is better than takeout and ready in about 30 minutes! It is a quick and delicious meal made with sirloin, broccoli, soy and oyster sauce, fresh ginger and garlic, and some cornstarch to thicken the savory sauce.

  • First we will marinate the sirloin strips with a combination of soy sauce, sesame oil, dry sherry, cornstarch and minced garlic.
  • A simple cooking sauce is made by combining oyster sauce, soy sauce, chicken stock, cornstarch, brown sugar, minced ginger, and sesame oil together.
  • Fresh broccoli florets add crunch and balance to this meal, and toasted sesame seeds add even more flavor (not shown above).

How to make Easy Beef and Broccoli

Mix beef strips, soy sauce, cornstarch, sesame oil, dry sherry, and minced garlic together in a large bowl.

Marinate for 15 minutes.

Make the Cooking Sauce

In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, sugar, 2 teaspoons cornstarch, chopped ginger, and chicken stock. Set aside.

Lightly Cook the Broccoli

Option 1 – place broccoli in a microwave safe bowl with 1 tablespoon of water. Cover and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Option 2 – place the broccoli in a saucepan of boiling water for 30 seconds. Remove with a strainer and place in a bowl.

Heat the wok over medium-high heat. Add the oil and marinated beef strips.

Cook the beef until browned, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the wok from the stove, place the beef in a bowl, and set aside.

Return the wok to the stove, reduce heat to medium and add the cooking sauce. Stir and scrape the bottom with a wooden turner to remove any cooked on bits. Heat sauce until it starts to simmer.

Stir in the beef strips and broccoli and toss to thoroughly coat.

If sauce thickens too much, add additional chicken stock to thin.

Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and serve with Steamed Rice, Cauliflower Rice, or cooked noodles for a quick and delicious meal without leaving the house!

🥦 Why do you cook the broccoli separately?

I like my broccoli al dente, not mushy, and not raw. If I cook it separately in the microwave, or in boiling water, it will be perfectly cooked!

Substitute tapioca flour for cornstarch, and substitute coconut aminos for the soy sauce.

📍Recipe Notes & Tips

  • Substitute black pepper for the white if you like. White pepper is spicier, so it has more of a kick. Add cayenne pepper for even more heat if desired.
  • Chinese wine can be substituted for the dry sherry, if you can find it.
  • Chicken stock adds a richer flavor than beef stock, but either will work. Water can be substituted if needed.

Ingredients

For the Marinated Beef

  • 1 pound beef sirloin cut into thin strips
  • 1 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari (gluten-free)
  • 2 Tablespoons dry sherry
  • 0.5 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 2 large cloves garlic minced
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger finely minced
  • teaspoon white pepper

Cooking Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 0.5 cup chicken stock

To Stir Fry

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound fresh broccoli cut into small florets
  • toasted sesame seeds to garnish

Instructions

Marinate the Beef

  • Mix beef strips, soy sauce, cornstarch, sesame oil, dry sherry, and minced garlic together in a large bowl. Marinate for 15 minutes.

  1. I love stir fry too because you can chop all the ingredients and set up the rice anytime during the day when you have time, and then throw it together quickly when the evening “crush” sets in and I am running kids around and helping with homework and such….

      1 and 1/4 cup beef stock

      I cannot figure out how to make Cooking Sauce bold so it stands out!
