Instant Pot Steel Cut Oatmeal

You can easily make this simple and delicious Instant Pot Steel Cut Oatmeal in minutes, add any toppings of your choice, or serve it plain. This recipe is dairy free, vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free if you use certified oats!

There is a cute little cookbook that comes with my new Instant Pot, and the Three Minute Steel Cut Oats by Jill Nussinow, MS, RDN {theveggiequeen.com} caught my eye immediately.

Then I read through the instructions…they cook for 3 minutes, but you have to wait for the Instant Pot to heat up, then you have to wait for it to cool down enough to release the pressure so you can take the lid off. So the three minute oats are actually more like 15 to 20 minutes!! I thought this thing was supposed to be fast!

So I decided to give it a try, and I am so glad that I did! I’ll explain later, first let’s make some breakfast!

How to make Instant Pot Steel Cut Oatmeal

Add the water, milk, salt, and oats to to the Instant Pot.

Twist the lid to lock into place. Select the Manual function and press the arrows to cook 3 minutes.

When the Instant Pot beeps, allow it to sit until the pressure drops and the lid opens easily. {this can take 10 to 15 minutes}

They look a little bit “wet” at first, but don’t panic…keep going. 😉

Stir in the vanilla, cinnamon, agave nectar, walnuts, and cranberries. Adjust the sweetness as needed.

Serve with additional cranberries and walnuts.

Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave.

So why did I like this Instant Pot® Steel Cut Oatmeal even thought it takes much longer than three minutes? Because I don’t have to stand over the stove and stir it for 20 minutes like regular steel cut oatmeal! I can turn it on and go check my email, or go get dressed and it cooks itself.

Recipes Notes & Tips:

  • If you do not like dried cranberries substitute raisins or any other dried fruit of your choosing.
  • Stir in Instant Pot Apple Butter and toasted pecans for a delicious fall-flavored breakfast.
  • I chose toasted walnuts, but any nuts will work.
  • Do not use regular milk! Apparently it will scorch so you must use a non-dairy milk.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup unsweetened CashewMilk
  • .06 teaspoon sea salt (a pinch)
  • 1 cup steel cut oats
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon agave nectar (or honey – add 2 tablespoons for additional sweetness)
  • .33 cup dried cranberries (diced)
  • .25 cup toasted walnuts (chopped)

  1. OK, so I’ll probably never own an Instant Pot, simply because I have a pressure cooker that essentially does the same thing. But don’t think for one minute that not owning an IP will stop me from making this delicious steel cut oatmeal for breakfast! I love your addition of dried cranberries… I have a stash of them in my pantry! 🙂

  3. Honestly it works so much better to cook steel cut oats on the 10 to 11 minute time as suggested by the InstantPot site!

  4. I make this for my wife. She loves it. I use brown sugar instead of Honey, almonds instead of walnuts and almomond milk instead of cashew.

  5. This is a simple and delicious recipe! I usually add an additional cup of almond milk because the leftovers really thicken in the refrigerator. I add 2 peeled, diced apples at the beginning and they cook perfectly with the oats. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

  6. Just made this! Did you use regular liquid measuring cups for the liquid or the small plastic cup that comes with it? I used regular liquid measuring cups and the oatmeal was perfectly cooked through (after about 20 mins of releasing the pressure naturally) but it was a bit liquid-y. As it cools, I see it solidifying, but I was just wondering.

    I also bought my Instant Pot on Prime Day, so glad I did, all 3 of my daughters now have one as well! Everything I have tried, including your steel cut oats, has been a success and yummy!
