Well it finally happened… I finally got to throw my Harry Potter Party!! Yes, I do realize that the last movie came out 3 years ago. This party has been in the making for about 10 years now, but there is an annual Halloween Party that I go to every year that takes the best weekend. By best weekend, I mean the only weekend without high school or college football games!! The ex is also not a huge Potter fan, so he always talked me out of it…not anymore!

I know, your scratching your head wondering why I threw a Halloween Party on the 4th of October? Well, that was the only other weekend that I “thought” did not have any band performances. It turns out that there was a competition, so I had a much smaller turnout than expected…but we still had a lot of fun!!

I was Professor Trelawney {my hair would not stay big and puffy} and Sandy is Professor Umbridge. Yes, I do need a better phone/camera!

Two women dressed as Gryffindor wizzards.

Cheryl and Kathy were Gryffindors. Arlo was supposed to be a giant black spider, but I forgot to put his costume on. 😉

Alex {too bad Red Beard was not a character}…..

Two girls sitting at a table with lots of candles, eating pizza rolls and cauldron cakes.

Kristin, Varuka, Dan {disappears whenever a camera comes out} and Christopher were Muggles. 🙂  In their defense, they came straight from Oktoberfest!

Having the party early in the month is actually perfect. I will be posting recipes from the party all month long leading up to Halloween. Starting with this delicious Butter Beer Cocktail.

Since this is not a kid’s birthday party, all of the drinks contain alcohol…just so you know.

The first one I made, was way too sweet! So I added some Guinness to deepen the flavor and cut the sweetness. You can use any dark beer that you have on hand. I used 1 ounce, and I could taste it in the first sip. After the second sip, I could no longer taste it…perfect! Use less to start, you can always add more.

How to make a Butter Beer Cocktail:

Start by adding the vanilla vodka, butterscotch schnapps, and beer to a glass mug.

Vodka, schnapps, and Guinness in the bottom of a beer mug.

Sorry, my camera focused on everything except the mug! I used Jones Cream Soda because it does not contain high fructose corn syrup. Very slowly add the cream soda.

Let the bubbles dissipate, and add the whipped cream {I used dairy-free Rice Whip}.

Very carefully pour the leftover cream soda over the whipped cream to achieve a creamier look.

Recipe Notes:

  • The amount of soda used, will be determined by the size of your mug. I just added the leftover soda to the mug as it went down.
  • I did not serve the Butter Beer Cocktail with straws, because there were no straws in the movies. 😉

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce vanilla vodka
  • 1 ounce butterscotch schnapps
  • 0.5 ounce dark beer* I used Guinness – 1/2 to 1 ounce
  • 10 ounces Jones cream soda
  • whipped cream

Instructions

  • Pour vodka, schnapps, and beer into a glass mug.
  • Slowly pour in the cream soda. Allow bubbles to dissipate.
  • Top with whipped cream, and pour a bit more cream soda over the whipped cream until glass is full.

Notes

  • I chose Guinness because it is a strong, dark beer that would cut the sweetness of this drink.
  • The amount of cream soda will depend on the size of your mug, and how much whipped cream you add. You can always continue adding the leftover soda as you drink.

  1. That looks like a very fun party! I love that kind of stuff. I was a Harry Potter fan and so was one of my daughters. It’s all good fun, and the butter beer looks yummy!

  2. We were just talking about how my daughter’s first Harry Potter book had to be sacrificed on a camping trip because my husband forgot to bring toilet paper. (You know I wasn’t on that trip.) Your party looks fab. If I lived anywhere close to you I would have come to the party. Probably dressed as Slytheirn just to off set all the heroic types showed up.

  3. Yummy yum yum!!!! And I LOVE Harry Potter and it’s never too late to throw an HP themed party!!

I want Phil to take me down to Universal Studios to visit Diagon Alley. 😛

    1. I am dying to go down there as well Andi!! My daughter lives in Orlando, so it’s just a case of finding the time to go!! I’m going with the theory that Harry Potter will be around forever, and I am just coming up with ideas for the next generation. 😉

  4. I love Harry Potter and all the fun details in the books and movies. This drink was something I always thought would be fun to recreate. What a fantastic job! The party look really fun too. I want an invite the next time, kay? 🙂

  5. Don’t hate me, but I have never watched Harry Potter – nor have I read the books! However, my kiddos have so I know some of the terminologies – and I remember them mentioning “butter beer”! 🙂 I have to admit, this grown up version sounds way better than what I imagine butter beer being in the movie!! Ha! Pinned and stumbled! 🙂
