Vanilla is one of the most popular flavors in the world. I’m sure everyone has a bottle or two of vanilla extract in their spice cabinet, but what do you do when you want the flavor of vanilla but not the liquid? What if you want the flavor, but not the alcohol? I started researching this very question last week while I was working on my Homemade Hot Cacao Mix…..

and Homemade Vanilla Powder is the answer!! You can purchase vanilla powder online, but I didn’t have the patience to wait around for it to arrive in the mail…and it’s very expensive 😉 Not that vanilla beans are not expensive themselves, but a little bit goes a long way! The flavor is very concentrated and will last through several recipes…..

I think I got about 3/4 of an ounce of vanilla powder {1 Tablespoon + 1 teaspoon}. I only needed 1/2 a teaspoon to make a batch of Double Chocolate Hot Cacao Mix.

Yep that’s right, I went through this whole process to create a healthier, dairy-free, super delicious chocolate mix to use in my mocha, lol. But now that I have created this delicious vanilla powder, I can’t wait to try out more recipes!!

  • I used whole vanilla beans from the grocery store {two jars…yikes}. If you look around you kind find good deals on them.
  • To clean out my coffee grinder {and remove the coffee smell}, I ground up a handful of dried rice and wiped it out with a damp towel.
  • Store your Homemade Vanilla Powder in an airtight, glass container until ready to use.

  2. Hi Lisa! Thank you for sharing this nifty idea! I bet this could be turned into a “vanilla sugar” recipe by adding powdered sugar. Vanilla sugar is something I’ve seen a lot living in Europe but can’t remember if it’s a stateside thing… Anyway now I know I can make it myself!! 🙂
