It’s 116 degrees outside and you need to make dinner…what do you do? Well, you definitely don’t turn on the oven! I have a covered patio, so it makes much more sense to go outside and throw some hot dogs on the grill. Not just any hot dogs though, these are extra special Barbecue Bacon Hot Dogs topped with crispy onion rings…..

I’m sure you’ve seen ALL of those food videos on Facebook, right? There was one for hot dogs wrapped in bacon and cooked on the barbecue that caught my eye last week. I have no idea who came up with the original idea since most of those videos are recipes stolen from bloggers, and they never give credit to the blogger. 🙁 Not that this is a hard recipe to recreate, lol

How to make Barbecue Bacon Hot Dogs:

Preheat gas grill to medium. I used 2 burners, and left the 3 turned off. If you have a charcoal grill, you’ll have to figure that one out for yourself. 😉

Wrap one bacon slice around each hot dog {as many as needed} and place on a plate. Place hot dogs on the grill with the ends of the bacon down on the grill. Cook until bacon looks cooked…..

The bacon in the video was longer, and covered the entire hot dog. I have no clue where to find that bacon, so I just used regular old strips.

Flip hot dogs over and brush with barbecue sauce…..

Continue cooking until second side is cooked. Yes, some of the bacon shrinks and falls off of the hot dogs, just go with it. 😉

Flip hot dogs over, brush with sauce, and cook until sauce is heated.

Split hot dog buns down the middle {if they are not pre-cut}. Place on the grill to toast…..

and top with Crispy Onion Rings…..

The video used “canned” onions….ewwwwe, no thank you, I’ll make my own. 🙂

I used my favorite Bourbon Brown Sugar Barbecue Sauce, but you can use any sauce that you like. Pineapple Bourbon Barbecue Sauce might be fun to try next time! Tangy and Sassy Barbecue Sauce and Cherry Chipotle do not contain alcohol if that’s more your thing. 🙂

Notes:

  • Make the onion rings ahead of time so you can throw these Barbecue Bacon Hot Dogs together right when they come off the grill.
  • I used unsplit hot dog buns from the bakery so the bun would cradle the hot dog and not fall open, but that’s personal preference.
  • Check out this Homemade Hot Dog Buns post if you would like to make your own. I decided last minute, so I didn’t have time.

My original idea was to add cheese to the inside of each hot dog, but it melted and dripped out all over the grill…so back to the drawing board on that one!

  1. These probably have a similar effect to the mini hot dogs wrapped in phyllo dough. If you make them, you will be immediately surrounded by a crowd of guys. Not a bad recipe for a young woman to tuck away 🙂
