  • Pink dragon fruit will have the most vibrant color, but white dragon fruit will taste the same and still make a delicious smoothie.
  • Frozen berries of your choice – I used raspberries and blackberries.
  • Frozen banana – fresh bananas can also be used. If smoothie is not thick enough you may need to add ice cubes or less milk.

What is dragon fruit?

Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya, is a tropical fruit that comes from several species of cactus in the Hylocereus and Selenicereus genera. These fruits are native to Central America but are now cultivated in various regions around the world due to their increasing popularity.

I have one growing in my Arizona backyard, but it is not producing fruit yet.

The flesh of the dragon fruit comes in two main varieties: white flesh and pink flesh. The white-fleshed variety has a mild, subtly sweet flavor, while the magenta-fleshed variety is more vibrant and has a slightly tangy taste, akin to a cross between a kiwi and a pear.

Both types are filled with tiny black seeds that add a pleasant crunch to the smooth texture. There is no way to tell which color flesh it has from the outside unless they are marked.

It’s popularity in many parts of the world due to its unique appearance, taste, and potential health benefits. It is often used in smoothies, salads, desserts, making it a versatile and exotic addition to your culinary creations.

🥤Recipe FAQs

Where can I find dragon fruit?

Many larger supermarkets and well-stocked grocery stores carry dragon fruit, especially those with a diverse selection of fresh produce like Whole Foods. It is also found in many Asian grocery stores or local farmer’s markets.

How do I pick a ripe dragon fruit for my smoothie?

Look for dragon fruits that are brightly colored with little to no blemishes or brown spots. They should feel slightly firm but not too hard or too soft. A ripe dragon fruit should give in slightly when pressed.

Can I use frozen dragon fruit for my smoothie?

Absolutely! Frozen dragon fruit works well in smoothies and can give them a thicker and creamier texture. It also allows you to enjoy dragon fruit even when it’s not in season.

It can be found in the frozen section of grocery stores in the frozen fruit or dessert section sold in frozen cubes or as dragon fruit puree in dragon fruit smoothie packs.

Is dragon fruit smoothie healthy?

Yes, dragon fruit smoothies can be a healthy option, especially when prepared with natural ingredients like fresh fruits and coconut milk. Dragon fruit is rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and a good amount of fiber, making it a nutritious addition to your diet.

What other fruits can I add to my dragon fruit smoothie?

Dragon fruit pairs well with a variety of fresh fruit, such as mango, pineapple, papaya, and citrus fruits. Experiment with different combinations to create your favorite blend.

Can I prepare dragon fruit smoothies in advance?

While it’s best to enjoy smoothies fresh, you can prepare them in advance and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a few hours. The texture will not be the same since it is no longer frozen.

  1. Every time I visit the local Asian Market I’ve been tempted to buy a dragon fruit (probably due to their unusual shape and colors) but I didn’t know what to do with them. Thanks for sharing this recipe – now I’ll buy one and make a smoothie! Blessings, Janet
