Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease an 8 x 8 baking dish* with 1 Tablespoon of butter, set aside.
To make the Filling:
Whisk sugar, salt, cornstarch, and zest together in a large bowl.
Add the berries and cherries and toss to coat. Stir in vanilla and lemon juice. Pour into prepared baking dish.
To make the Topping:
Mix sugar, zest, flour, baking powder, and salt together in a medium sized bowl. Cut in the butter using a pastry cutter or two forks until pea-sized lumps form.
Stir in the milk until it forms a soft dough. Spoon the dough evenly over the berry filling.
Sprinkle 1 Tablespoon of sugar over the topping. Bake until golden and bubbling, about 35 minutes.
Allow to cool slightly and serve with vanilla ice cream.
Notes
I used a 2 quart oval baking dish, not an 8 x 8. I wanted something a bit more “blog worthy”. As long as it is similar in size, it will work.
