Have you seen the images of Whipped Dalgona Coffee all over social media recently? I still do not know what TikTok is, but I was definitely curious about this crazy new coffee drink! Someone got really bored while under quarantine and decided to create a coffee drink based on a popular sugar candy that is sold on the streets of Korea.

What you need to create this recipe

  • water
  • ice
  • milk
  • hand blender

What is Whipped Dalgona Coffee?

It is an iced coffee drink that consists of a layer of ice cold milk, topped with a thick and creamy layer of meringue-like whipped coffee. It is said to resemble the toffee/honeycomb type candy that is sold on sticks. And yes, this a very sweet coffee drink!

I know, it sounds crazy but it is really delicious!!

You drink the milk through the whipped coffee layer, no straws required.

That is an image of the keto version made with erithritol.^^^ Foamy but not creamy…more on that later. Sorry, but I cannot drink real milk to show what it looks like.

How to make Whipped Dalgona Coffee

Place the instant coffee granules and sugar into a small, deep bowl.

Recipe Notes:

  • An immersion blender will not work, you need a hand mixer.
  • You can whip by hand with a whisk, but it takes about 400 stirs and your arm will be very tired.
  • I used a milk frother to make a keto version, but I could not get it to whip the regular sugar version. More in a minute…
  • Feel free to use any type of milk that you like. The images above are whole milk, the image below is unsweetened vanilla almond milk.
  • All of you coffee purist can use 2 Tablespoons of brewed coffee or espresso in place of the instant coffee and water. Yes it does taste better!

It does not have the same creamy consistency, the real sugar really holds the original version together! Because it is not as creamy the coffee starts to separate from the sugar (erythritol) very quickly, but it is still really delicious.

The keto version actually blended better with the frother than the hand mixer…

but I never could get it to whip the regular sugar version. I am sure there is a chemical reason for this, but I did not look it up. LOL
