Being sick sucks!! There is nothing worse than not being able to sleep through the night because you cannot breathe, or you can’t stop coughing. There used to be a nighttime coughing, sneezing, aching head, fever or you can rest medicine {aka NyQuil®} that would let us all sleep through the night like a baby…until Congress messed everything up…..
“Following the passage of the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act in 2006, in the United States all pseudoephedrine-containing medications must be kept behind a pharmacy counter and all purchases must be logged.”
That’s right, thanks to the drug makers using pseudoephedrine to create Meth, the law obeying citizens must now jump through hoops and practically sign away their first born to purchase pseudoephedrine!
“Vicks chose to reformulate NyQuil Sinus in 2006, replacing pseudoephedrine with phenylephrine“….which is completely useless and a HUGE mistake!
So a few years ago I decided to get creative and come up with my own version of Nighttime Cold Medicine so I could sleep through the night….and it works perfectly! 🙂
No, it is not as simple as taking a shot of NyQuil®, but it also isn’t rocket science.
What you need to create Homemade Nighttime Cold Medicine:
- 2 – Extra Strength Tylenol® ( 1,000 mg Acetaminophen) for aching and fever
- 1 – Maximum Strength Mucinex-DM®* (60 mg Dextromethorphan) a cough suppressant
- 1 – Unisom® (25 mg Doxylamine Succinate) to help you sleep
- 1 – 12 hour Sudafed® (60 mg Pseuduephedrine) a decongestant to help you breathe
- 1 – shot alcohol of your choice (optional) to give you that warm sensation that the old NyQuil® used to give you. 😉
- *Mucinex-DM® also contains 1,200 mg of Guaifenesin which is an expectorant and not in the original NyQuil® formula
Voilà, you can finally survive cold and flu season once again. 🙂 🙂
I was trying to recreate the flavor of the red version of NyQuil® by mixing cherry schnapps and rum together, but it was pretty nasty, LOL If you enjoyed the green version of NyQuil®, then a shot of Jägermeister will do the trick…that’s pretty nasty tasting as well, LOL
Remember: avoid dairy when you are congested, it is a mucus simulator that will just make things worse.

Not that I want any of you to get sick, but if you do I hope this post will help. 🙂
Enjoy!!

You. Are. My. Hero! Thanks so much for putting this little concoction together. I had no idea that Nyquil changed, I was blaming my metabolism or some such nonsense. Thanks for linking up at Best of the Weekend. I’m not just being polite. I’m grateful from the bottom of my lungs and chest 😉
