Cold and flu season is upon us and it is time to fight back! How do I plan to fight back you ask? With a soothing Hot Toddy before bed….at least that is my current plan. Tomorrow I will be back with a recipe for homemade nighttime cold medicine that is also part of my arsenal for trying to survive. I don’t know about you, but I like sleep!!

A few weeks ago I was watching The Kitchen on Food Network. They were talking about all of their favorite ways to enjoy whiskey, and a Hot Toddy was mentioned. I have heard of Hot Toddy’s in the past, but I honestly had no idea what it was…until I came down with a brutal cold last week and I decided that it was time to figure it out. 😉

As you can imagine, there are about a million different ways to make a Hot Toddy, but this turned out to be my favorite. Warning: the images are a bit different than the final recipe, so just go with it. 😉

How to make a Hot Toddy:

Start by pouring 1 ounce of bourbon whiskey into a glass or cup…..

I was going for something smooth that wouldn’t burn the back of my throat, so I chose to use Four Roses.

Now add 1 Tablespoon of honey…..

Even with my head pounding and the room spinning, I still can’t stop taking step-by-step photos, LOL

Pour in the boiling hot water…..

Add a lemon slice, then use a cinnamon stick to stir the drink together. Allow your drink to sit for a few minutes to cool down, and to let the lemon infuse with the other flavors…..

Now sit back and enjoy before bedtime. The theory behind the Hot Toddy is that the Vitamin C from the lemon helps your immune system. The honey is to soothe, and and the alcohol is to numb!

All I know, is that I need all the help I can get to fall asleep when I am sick. How about you? Do you have trouble getting to sleep when your sick?
