How to make upside-down apple tart

Preheat oven to 400° F. Line two, rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper.

I prefer to make my tarts one sheet at a time, but feel free to make both at the same time if that works better for you.

Unroll the first puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Roll out slightly with a rolling pin to get rid of the deep creases. Cut each sheet into six rectangles.

FAQs

Can I use a different type of apple?

Absolutely! Some popular choices include Honeycrisp or Gala apples. Experiment with different types to find the flavor and texture you prefer.

Can I make these tarts ahead of time?

While it’s best to enjoy the tart fresh out of the oven, you can make it a few hours in advance. Simply let it cool to room temperature, and when you’re ready to serve, warm briefly in the oven or serve at room temperature.

How do I store apple tarts?

Allow tarts to cool completely, then place in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator, they contain cheese, for no more than 3 days. The puff pastry starts to get soggy and a bit chewy the longer they are stored.

Can I freeze upside down puff pastries?

While it’s possible to freeze the tart, the texture of the puff pastry may be affected upon thawing and reheating. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and freeze for up to one month. To thaw, place in the refrigerator for 24 hours.

Can I add other ingredients or spices to this recipe?

Absolutely! You can add a sprinkle of chopped nuts, such as walnuts, pistachios, or pecans, to the caramelized apples for extra crunch. A sprinkle of cinnamon, ginger, or cloves can be added for a hint of warmth.
