Max and everyone in Who-ville will love this Grinch Puppy Chow Chex Mix recipe during the holidays! Melted chocolate and peanut butter mixed with rice chex and holiday candies, then tossed with powdered sugar create a fun and festive Muddy Buddies treat that the whole family will love!
Question…..do you call it Grinch Puppy Chow or Muddy Buddies? We called it Puppy Chow in California, and of course the Grinch has a dog named Max, so I went with Grinch Puppy Chow.
It really doesn’t matter what you call it, you just need to make it…and eat it…like now!!
How to make Grinch Puppy Chow:
Measure cereal and place in an extra-large bowl; set aside.
Place candy melts, peanut butter, and butter in a microwavable bowl. Heat on HIGH for 1 minute, stir. Heat for an additional 30 seconds, or until smooth, and stir to combine. Stir in the vanilla and green food coloring.
Pour mixture over the cereal and stir until evenly coated.
Place .75-cup of powdered sugar in a one gallon freezer bag.
Add half of the cereal mixture, seal the bag and toss to coat.
Pour mixture out onto a silicone or wax paper lined baking sheet.
Repeat with the remaining mixture and sugar…then add it to the same baking sheet.
Sprinkle M&M’s over Puppy Chow and toss to combine.
Serve once cooled…in a dog bowl since everyone has an extra one laying around, right?
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator….if it lasts that long!
Recipe Notes & Tips:
- I used Rice Chex because those are my favorite, but use whatever version your family likes the best.
- The “official” recipe calls for a 2-gallon bag, but I have never seen one of those in the grocery store! We have always made ours in a 1-gallon bag and it works just fine.
- The M&M’s and green jimmies will not stick to anything, they are just there to look festive.

- I added Leaf Green gel color to achieve a deep Grinch green color, but it turned out darker than I was expecting.
- Electric Green gel color is a much better match to grinch green!
- I still have plenty of Jumbo Red Heart Sprinkles left from previous Grinch recipes, so I threw some in for fun.
- A ginormous bowl is a must for stirring all of the ingredients together! I have a really old version of this Tupperware Thatsa Bowl.
- A Silicone Spoon makes combining ingredients easy.
- Baking Sheet
- Silicone Liner
- If you would like to use a 2 Gallon Ziploc Bag, they are available on Amazon.
- Yes, I did purchase a Stuffed Grinch and Book for these posts…and then of course I needed stuffed Max reindeer for the Grinch Puppy Chow….because I am weird like that!
