It is that time of year again…It is Pumpkin Spice Latte season! I could have sworn it was just Memorial Day weekend, but here we are again. So I hope you are ready for all things pumpkin, apple, and fall flavored to start hitting your inboxes! Which of course means that Christmas is right around the corner!
How is that even possible? Where does the time go?
What is a Pumpkin Spice Latte?
A Pumpkin Spice Latte is a gourmet coffee drink made with a mix of traditional fall spice flavors (cinnamon, nutmeg and clove), pumpkin puree, steamed milk, espresso, sugar or another sweetener, topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice. Yes, pumpkin pie spice also contains ginger…it’s just easier to use. 😉
Why should I make a Pumpkin Spice Latte at home?
- It is cheaper.
- It is healthier – you can control the ingredients, including the amount of sugar!
- You do not have to leave the house or wait in a long line!
How to make a Pumpkin Spice Latte at home:
Stove Top Version:
Add the milk, sugar, pumpkin puree and sweetener to a medium saucepan. Whisk to combine.
Heat the mixture over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes, until the sweetener and pumpkin dissolve. Do not allow to boil!!
Remove from heat and add the vanilla and espresso/coffee.
Whisk to combine, then continue whisking until frothy.
Pour into a mug and top with whipped cream/coconut cream and sprinkle with additional pumpkin pie spice.
Espresso Machine Version:
Place the sweetener in the bottom of a mug. Add the hot espresso/coffee and stir to dissolve the sweetener.
Add the pumpkin puree and spices, stir to combine.
Steam the milk and pour into the mug. Stir to thoroughly combine.
Top with whipped cream/coconut whipped cream, sprinkle with pumpkin pie spice and serve.
Notes:
- Whole30 – omit sweetener and use unsweetened almond milk or canned coconut milk.
- Paleo – use maple syrup as the sweetener and unsweetened almond milk or canned coconut milk.
- Keto – use Lakanto Golden (use code yummyhealthyketo15%) or Swerve Brown sweetener and unsweetened almond milk or canned coconut milk.
- Whole or 2 % milk can also be used if dairy is not an issue.
- Sweetener options – brown sugar, maple syrup, honey
