Juicy and delicious peaches always remind me of summer, and all of the sweet and savory recipes that can be created with them during the short peach season.

This peach habanero bbq sauce recipe was created with my son and his wife in mind. They love all things spicy, the spicier the better. I have yet to find anything too spicy for those two!

What is the heat level of habanero peppers?

On the Scoville scale, which measures the spiciness of chili peppers, habaneros typically range from 100,000 to 350,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). A jalapeño pepper, which is considered moderately spicy, ranges from 2,500 to 8,000 SHU.

Habanero pepper are known for their fiery punch, especially if the membrane and seeds are included! To reduce the heat, a bit, be sure to remove the membrane and all of the seeds before dicing.

What you’ll need

Ingredients needed to make peach habanero bbq sauce.

My goal was to create layers of flavor in this bbq sauce without making it sickly sweet. Add additional brown sugar for more sweetness.

  • Big, juicy, fresh peaches – substitute canned in juice peaches if fresh are not available or they have no flavor early in the season.
  • Orange habanero peppers – there are actually other colors, but orange is the most widely available.
  • Sweet onion and fresh garlic cloves sautéed in olive oil with the peppers add the base layer of flavor for this sweet and tangy sauce.
  • Grated fresh ginger adds a nice background flavor and a bit of zing.
  • Tomato sauce – you can substitute ketchup if needed.
  • Apple cider vinegar adds tang that is expected in barbecue sauce.
  • Dry mustard powder and smoked paprika for a smokey addition of flavor. Substitute sweet paprika if you prefer.
  • Brown sugar adds sweetness with hints of molasses.
