Football Party

Are you ready for some football? Are you a football fan, or forced to go along? I must admit…I know nothing about football, but I do know how to throw a Football Party!
Some of my parties are completely over the top, and some I like to keep really simple. For this weekend’s game, I was looking for simple like the Ranch Dressing to go with the wings and Pico de Gallo to go with the tortilla chips.
I hopped in the car and headed out to the store to purchase Wet-Nap Hand Wipes. I got this brilliant idea in my head to turn those canisters into Referees, so I needed the food portion of the football party to be really easy to prepare! I was brainstorming all week, trying to figure out exactly how I wanted to make my referees…..
I am a painter, so I thought I would paint black stripes on the canisters. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to spray paint the stripes, or paint them on with a brush…so I bought both. I bought a few different sizes of tape to create the lines, and then it dawned on me…the tape is black! So skip the paint, and just use the black tape Lisa. 🙂
How to make Wet-Nap Referees:
Do you see the “SEAL” on the top of the canister? Good, leave it there!! Remove the lid, and place the canister in warm water to remove the labels…..
I used the measuring cup to weight the canister down. It is full of air, so it wants to float to the top. I left it in for 10 to 15 minutes, and then tried to pull the label off. The top layer came off, but the paper…not so much! I scraped off as much as I could, then placed it back in the water for an additional 10 to 15 minutes to continue soaking.
While the canister is soaking, take the lid outside and spray paint it black with Black Gloss Paint for Plastic…..
While the lid is drying, go back inside and use a scrubby sponge to remove all of the paper label. You will be left with industrial strength glue on the canister…Ugggh! I tried acetone and oil, but no luck. Then I googled how to remove labels, and decided to try peanut butter…..
and it worked!! Spread the peanut butter over the glue with a knife and allow to sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Wipe off with a paper towel, and rub with dish soap. Let it sit for a few minutes to dissolve the oil residue, then rinse with hot water and dry completely.
Now for the fun part. Place the 3/4″ black Artist’s Tape {that I found in the artist’s section at Michaels} on the canister to create the stripes. Just eyeball an even distance between the stripes, and leave some extra tape at the ends…..
If you look closely, you will see very faint lines along the bottom of the canister…..
Use micro-tip scissors, or an X-Acto knife to trim the tape along the line. I left the tape long at the top because I knew it would be covered by the lid.
Now add a whistle, and trim the cord to fit the canister. I could not find a cheap, toy whistle so mine is a “real” whistle that is actually too big for this project …but it’s all that I had. 🙂 Hot glue the ends of the cord in the back to keep the whistle in place. Remove the seal and place the lid on the canister…..
I did not paint the inside of the lid, because I didn’t want to contaminate the wipes…..
The orange or blue will still show, but I think your guests will be so distracted by it’s cuteness and the Baked Buffalo Chicken Wings that they won’t mind. 😉
You still have time before the next Football Party to make your own Wet-Nap Hand Wipes Referee.

Not one bit Cindy!! Thank you so much. 🙂
Oh my gosh Lisa! Cute and tasty ideas.
Thank you so much Sheryl. 🙂
I’m not a huge football fan, but I’m always ready for a party! 🙂
Me too Julie, any excuse for a party! 🙂
Seriously… this referee Wet-Naps canister is so cute! I love this! And the peanut butter trick?? I had NEVER heard of that! You learn something new everyday, lol. 😉
Thank you Carrie. 🙂 I hadn’t either, but now I will need an extra jar of peanut butter just for removing labels! LOL
You have got to be kidding me …. peanut butter?! I can’t tell you how many times I have needed to know that!! Ha!! Great tip! The canister is super cute – and perfect for football parties!! 🙂 We love Tyson wings for parties – I’ll be looking for the any-tizers next time! I also love how you made sure you got a shot of your Hawkeye koozie!! 😀 LOVE it!!! LOL.
I know right? LOL I started laughing when I saw it on the screen, but so excited when it worked. I was in a panic at that point…that glue would not come off!! The koozie is the only thing I have that looks like football. 😉 Thanks so much Jamie!!
