This Cowboy Seasoning Rub is going to blow your mind! It is the perfect spice mix when you are looking for a dry rub with a chili base and no sweetness. It is super simple to make and you will have plenty to stash away for a summer of grilling steak, ribs and chicken. You an even mix it in with vegetables.

  • onion powder
  • cumin
  • paprika
  • dried oregano
  • black pepper
  • sea salt
  • cayenne pepper

How to make the Cowboy Seasoning Rub

In a small bowl, combine all the ingredients.

Sprinkle meat with spice mix and grill as desired.

Two steaks rubbed with cowboy steak rub laying on a white plate with a jar of spice mix in the background.

Just look how amazing these steaks look after they are grilled!

Perfection, it is one of my favorites!! This seasoning mix pairs perfectly with Alabama White Barbecue Sauce. Just in case you were wondering.

Recipe Notes

  • I used about one Tablespoon of spice mix per steak. Season as desired.
  • This is a dry rub so I did not rub the steaks with oil first. Use 2 teaspoons of oil per steak if you like.
  • Allow the spice mixture to sit on the meat for at least 30 minutes before grilling. You want your meat to be room temperature before you put it on the grill.

This looks great, and nice to have on hand. My husband likes spicy, but I like it a bit less. Maybe I could just cut the cayenne? Thanks for sharing:) Pinned it! Happy summer grilling.

You could always leave out the cayenne, but honestly I could not taste it at all. Thanks so much Seana, let me know what you think if you try it.
