Watermelon agua fresca, also known as “water of the melon”, is a refreshing blend of sweet and tart flavors that originated in Mexico. It’s made with fresh watermelon, water, lime juice and simple syrup for a touch of sweetness.

The watermelon is blended with the water and sweetener until smooth, then strained to remove any pulp or seeds.

What you’ll need

Ingredients needed to make watermelon agua fresca.
  • Watermelon – choose a watermelon that is uniform size and feels heavy, with an orange field spot, and larger webbing for a sweetest flavor.
  • Ice Water
  • Simple Syrup – this is best made ahead of time so it is nice and cold.
  • Lime Juice – squeezed from fresh lime, not one of those plastic limes from the produce section.
  • Mint Leaves – to garnish. I also aded a lime wheel to each glass.

FAQs

How long does agua fesca last?

Watermelon agua fresca is best enjoyed immediately after it’s made, but it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The texture and flavor of the agua fresca may change over time and the watermelon pulp may settle at the bottom of the container. If this happens, give it a good stir before serving.

Can I add alcohol?

Yes, of course! Add 2 ounces of tequila, vodka, or rum, to each glass and stir to combine.

Can I use frozen watermelon?

Yes, that is an excellent choice to create an icy cold drink!

Can I freeze leftover agua fresca?

I like to pour any leftover drinks into a zipper-topped freezer bag, squeeze out all of the air, and store it laying flat in the freezer for up to 3 months. Defrost overnight in the refrigerator.
