What is Limoncello?

Limoncello is a sweet Italian liqueur with intense lemon flavor. It is made by placing lemon peels in a bottle with vodka that is set aside to steep for several weeks to develop the highly concentrated lemon flavor by releasing the citrus oils. It is then mixed with simple syrup (sugar water) to create a sweet liqueur that can be sipped straight, or mixed into a cocktail.

Recipe Tips

  • Always use high-quality ingredients! Using cheap brands will make a bitter cocktail that no one will enjoy!
  • Vodka – Absolut Citron, Kettle One Citroen, Belvedere Citrus, and Grey Goose Le Citron are all excellent options.
  • Limoncello – Caravella is the most widely available, Pallini, and Luxardo are excellent choices if you can find them.
  • Ginger Beer – your choices may be determined by your location, but Fever-Tree, Gosling’s Stormy, Reed’s Extra, and Bundagerg are worth looking for as well.
  • Lemon Juice – use REAL LEMON or your drink will have a strange almost metallic taste to it. Just don’t do it! You need fresh lemons anyway for the garnish.
  • For best results, chill all of your ingredients in the refrigerator so you are ready to make this delicious cocktail anytime the mood strikes.
