Recipe Inspiration
Well it’s that time again, time for another edition of Cooking with Astrology. This month we are celebrating with our Scorpio friends and family, and Gerard Butler was chosen as the imaginary date.
Hence the iconic Scottish Rusty Nail Cocktail, made with Scotch Whisky, Drambuie, and a lemon twist. As my dad would say, “this drink will put hair on your chest”!! This drink is not for the faint of heart, it is hard core! Perfect for those cold, winter nights in Scotland. Oh how I would like to share one of these with Gerard Butler!
I searched and searched for an “official” recipe for the Rusty Nail, and most Scottish sites list equal parts (1:1) of Drambuie® “unique blend of aged Scotch Whisky, spices and heather honey”, and Scotch Whisky with a lemon twist.
There are also several recipes that suggested using additional Drambuie® for a sweeter drink. I was going for authenticity, so I went ahead and used equal parts. Play with it and see which way you prefer it, then come back and let me know what you think.
Ingredients
- Blended Scotch: This is the backbone of the Rusty Nail, providing a rich, smoky foundation. Blended Scotch brings together flavors from various malt and grain whiskies, ensuring a smooth but complex taste. In the Rusty Nail, it delivers the robust character that whisky enthusiasts crave.
- Drambuie: A golden liqueur, a blend of aged Scotch whisky, honey, herbs, and spices. It adds a sweet and warming touch to the cocktail, perfectly balancing the Scotch’s intensity.
Check out the printable recipe card below for the complete recipe and detailed instructions.
How to make a Rusty Nail Cocktail
Place the Scotch and Drambuie into a mixing glass. Add a generous amount of ice to the glass. The cold helps blend the flavors together.
Use a bar spoon to stir the mixture until it’s well-chilled. Stirring, as opposed to shaking, ensures a velvety texture by keeping the drink clear and minimizing dilution.
Strain the mixture into an old-fashioned glass over one large ice cube if you have one, fill with ice cubes if you don’t. Add a lemon twist if desired and serve immediately.
The Rusty Nail stands as a testament to the art of simple, yet powerful combinations. With its timeless blend of Scotch and Drambuie, it remains a favorite for those who appreciate the delicate mix of flavors that each sip brings.
Choosing the Right Scotch
- Blended scotch is often recommended for its balanced flavor profile. It combines the distinct characteristics of malt and grain whiskies, providing a smooth and approachable taste.
- Look for a Scotch with a medium to full-bodied profile, which can stand up to the sweetness of Drambuie without overpowering.
- Some trusted options include Famous Grouse or Chivas Regal. They provide complexity without overshadowing the liqueur.
- Don’t get too fixated on the perfect Scotch. Choose one you enjoy sipping on its own, as it will influence the cocktail’s flavor.
Perfect Pairings
- Cheese Platters: Go for sharp flavors like aged cheddar or blue cheese. Their creaminess and bite complement the whisky’s smoky notes.
- Charcuterie Board: Thin slices of prosciutto or salami are perfect companions. Their savory elements balance the drink’s sweetness.
- Desserts: Finish off with a dark chocolate treat like Instant Pot chocolate lava cakes or honey lemon popcorn. The sweetness in the dessert can either enhance the Drambuie’s honeyed tones or provide contrast.
- Main Courses: If you’re planning a meal, consider richer dishes like roast beef or Cornish Pasties. Their flavors mesh well with the cocktail’s robust character.
